Newsletter - August 2008

NDS

Greetings Everyone.

Michael Shacklock As promised, the feature article for this newsletter is entitled 'The Sporting Nerve - Part Two'. One of the fascinating and often hidden problems with sports people is the potential for a neurodynamic problem to hinder performance. This is particularly the case when there are no obvious signs of neural disorders, such as pins and needles, numbness or neurological changes. Read below how you can improve the sensitivity and specificity of your examination to detect the subtle sporting nerve. Michael Shacklock

Feature Article - The Sporting Nerve - (Part Two - Lower Quarter)

Runners One of the more important aspects of management of patients at a high level of function is to increase the sensitivity of the manual treatment technique so that small or hidden problems do not pass untreated. In this capacity, neurodynamic testing is no exception. A key objective therefore is to modify the technique so that it becomes as specific as possible to the patient's problem.

NDS in the USA - NDS braves Atlanta for its New USA Hub

Atlanta After much deliberation, Neurodynamic Solutions has made the brave decision by choosing Atlanta, GA, for its new hub in the United States. The decision was based on a number of things, great people and facilities were two of the reasons.

Included also was the opportunity to perform collaborative research at Georgia State University (GSU). We are now therefore collaborating with the university to produce a series of studies in relation to evaluating the effects of neurodynamic techniques in the lumbar spine.

NDS meets Alf Breig's Daughter at IFOMT

Whilst at the IFOMT congress in Rotterdam Holland, Michael and two others had the pleasure of meeting Dr Breig's daughter, who lives in the area. They spent time reminiscing over his life and what sort of man he was. It was widely agreed upon that he was a very strong man who was completely dedicated to the development of knowledge of biomechanics of the nervous system. Michael was joined by Professor José Miguel Tricas Moreno and Elena Bueno Gracia, both OMT therapists from Spain who also have a keen interest in clinical neurodynamics.

Interested in the Breig Book?

There has been a lot of interest in the new Breig book as an icon in Physiotherapy/Physical Therapy and Neurodynamics. Remember, Dr Alf Breig was the Leonardo da Vinci of the mechanics of the nervous system and, after performing cadaver dissections and many biomechanical experiments on numerous cadavers, NDS has released a wonderful compilation of his best work. It is full of glorious pictures, hand drawn by Breig, himself an artist, and many of the anatomical photographs were taken by Sweden's most famous medical photographer who was the Netter of medical photography.
